Celebrating 100 years

In 2018, the Missionary Society of St. Columban celebrates 100 years.  Here, you can learn about what we are doing to acknowledge this significant moment in our history and how you can take part.

On the Feast of St. Columban – 23rd November 2017 – Columban missionaries in 16 countries will begin to celebrate and give thanks for 100 years of participation in God’s mission.

Throughout 2018, the Columban family of priests, sisters, lay missionaries, co-workers and all who contribute to Columban mission will remember and pay tribute to all who have been part of the Columban journey since 29th June 1918, when the Society, then named the Maynooth Mission to China, was formally erected by the Vatican as a Society of Apostolic Life.

In Britain, we have chosen a former Columban parish, St. Catherine of Siena in Birmingham, as the venue for our opening Centenary Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday 25th November 2017.

In this section you can read about the Centenary Pilgrim Altar Cloth, signed by Columbans, benefactors and partners from all over the world, which will shortly begin a pilgrim journey to every country where Columbans are present. Perhaps you were one of those who added your name to the Britain section of the Altar Cloth when it visited Britain between March and May 2017.

Two further opportunities to take part in the Columban Centenary celebrations are the Schools Journalism Competition 2018 and a second Mass of Thanksgiving at St. George’s Cathedral in Southwark, London, which will be on Saturday 30th June 2018.

All are invited to share in the Centenary Prayer that has been written for all members of the Columban family to pray during the year, including our generous benefactors and supporters, who make Columban mission possible and walk with us in solidarity with the poor and the exploited earth.
