Mission Awareness

From the beginning, Columbans have committed time to sharing their vision and experience of Christian mission with people “at home”, with the aim of

  • Helping others to grow in their understanding of mission in the world today
  • Rousing the call to mission that every Christian shares through their baptism
  • Encouraging people to reflect on how they can share their gift of faith with others
  • Inviting people to participate in Columban mission

In Britain, we currently have a core team of six Columban priests with wide-ranging experience of mission in Chile, Peru, Pakistan, Taiwan, the Philippines and England, who are assigned to mission awareness in Britain.  They visit parishes at weekends in England, Wales and Scotland to give the annual Mission Appeal, meeting ordinary people and inviting them to participate in the Mission of God.  Following a brief talk or homily during Mass, people have the opportunity to request the Far East, the magazine of the Columban Missionaries, and make a donation to support the work of Columban missionaries with the poor and marginalised.

There are many who first came across the Columbans in this way and have gone on to become long-term, regular supporters and members of the Columban family.  We aim to keep them informed of our mission work by sending eight issues of the Far East every year and they respond loyally to our three annual appeals at Pentecost, September and Christmas.  We are humbled by their generosity, which we rely upon to fund our missionary work.  We hope that many others will join them and become our partners in mission as we approach our centenary year in 2018.

Mission Appeal 2017

In England and Wales, we are members of the Catholic Missionary Union and are given different dioceses for mission awareness each year. In 2017 we are visiting parishes in  the Dioceses of Hallam, Lancaster, in the Kent Deanery of Southwark Archdiocese, or the Deaneries of Bath, Bristol South, Cheltenham, Glastonbury, Salisbury, Taunton, Trowbridge or Weston Super Mare within the Diocese of Clifton. If you are a parish priest in these Diocese and Deaneries and would like to arrange a visit by a member of our team, please contact Helen Dufficy (Appeals Organiser) on 01564 772 096.

In Scotland, the Mission Appeals are co-ordinated by Missio Scotland and Fr. Declan McNaughton will be visiting parishes in the Dioceses of Argyll and the Isles, Aberdeen, Galloway and Glasgow.

We aim to share our experience of mission, including our advocacy work for justice, peace and the integrity of creation, with as many people as possible.  We welcome invitations to speak or facilitate at events from organisations, groups, universities and schools.  If you would like us to contribute in some way to what you are doing, please contact the Mission Office on 01564 772 096 or
