Remembering Environmental Martyrs
Columbans Parig Digan, Frank Nally and Aodh O’Halpin joined the ‘Carnival of Dirt’ on the steps of St. Paul’s Cathedral on Friday 15 June 2012. It was a protest against destructive mining and a commemoration of environmental martyrs.

Celebrating Earth Day in the Southern Philippines
Sean Martin, a Columban priest based in the Midsalip area of Mindanao in the Philippines, participated in an Earth Day rally and celebration there on 23 April. It involved around 500 people, many of them Catholics from the parishes of the area who have been active in trying to stop large-scale destructive mining in the region.

“Defending the Dignity of Life, Securing our Future” was the title of a workshop held in Mindanao, the Philippines, in January 2012 focusing on the impact of large-scale mining. It called for a mining moratorium in the light of negative impacts on local communities and the environment.
