The Columbans have joined the UK-based Working Group on Mining in the Philippines to complain to the UK government about its support for destructive mining in the Philppines.

The accompanying letter has been sent to prime minister David Cameron, particularly highlighting the impact of Xstrata’s Tampakan Copper-Gold project in South Cotabato in Mindanao. Xstrata is a UK-registered company. Several local people have been killed recently for protesting about the mine, particularly human rights violations and environmental destruction.
