July/ August Far East Out Now!

30th June 2017 - by Katie Fitzpatrick

In the July/August 2017 edition of the Far East we follow the personal experiences and emotions of the lay and ordained Columban community working in Korea, Peru, the Philippines, Fiji, Myanmar and Taiwan.

In December last year, Lynette Spencer made an emotional journey to Myanmar to lay her parent’s ashes to rest. She was delighted when Fr Neil Magill was able to assist her to fulfil her father’s wishes. Lynette shares her parent’s memories of the outbreak of war when the Japanese army invaded Burma (Myanmar). While there, she was delighted to visit the Mandalay Archdiocesan Higher Education Centre and witnessed the inspiring work of both the Columban’s who helped established the centre and the students themselves.

Fr Mike O’Loughlin recalls his unforgettable years in Korea in the 1960s where the Church in Korea was in transition as it faced a rapid expansion. He served in Korea between 1961-1981 and considers the influence of Bishop Tji and how he challenged the Church to a new level of awareness on social matters. South Korea now has one of the fastest growing Christian Churches in the world with the Christian population currently at around 60 million people.

Finally, we feature an article by Fr Martin Ryan who introduces us to the successes of the ‘IT WORKS’ recovery project for alcohol addiction which he established in the city of Ozamis, the Philippines, where Fr Martin has spent 6 decades of his missionary life. After witnessing the horrors alcohol had inflicted on many of his parishioners, he realised the desperate need for an informal, non-institutional treatment centre for those suffering with alcohol addiction. ‘IT WORKS’ has seen over 2,000 addicts rehabilitated through the faith, love and companionship offered by the project. Families are invited too, creating an open environment where no one has to face their problems alone.

We invite you to share your Columban story as we celebrate 100 years of Columban mission in 2018. Join us as we begin our celebrations with a Mass of Thanksgiving held on Saturday 25th November 2017 at St Catherine of Siena, Birmingham. For more information please refer to the back page of the
