Midsalip - A History of Resistance to Mining Protecting Mother Nature.

This article written by Columban Father Sean Martin and Columban Sister Ita Hannaway records the anti-mining protests in this part of the Zamboanga Peninsula on the southern island of Mindanao, Philippines since 1996 where Sean is based.
Columban Sister Ita Hannaway is based in Magheramore, Wicklow, the home of the Columban Sisters in Ireland. Sr Ita worked in the the Subaanen Ministry in Midsalip from 1990 to 1997 with Sr Kathleen Melia who has been living with the Subaanen for 29 years (1983 – 2012). Sr Ita in collaboration with Sr Kathleen has documented their experience in a recent publication “SPIRIT PREVAILS – The odyssey of the Subaanen people from the time of their arrival in Mindanao, Mindanao, Philippines.” The article was edited by Fr Frank Nally of Columban JPIC, London, who worked in Midsalip from 1985 – 1988 and was active in the People Power Picket against the illegal logging of the tropical forest then. He works on mining issues with the Working Group on Mining in the Philippines – UK, Mines and Communities, PipLinks and London Mining Network supporting affected communities.
