November Far East Out Now

23rd October 2017 - by Katie Fitzpatrick

In the November 2017 edition of the Far East, we begin our celebrations of the Centenary of the Missionary Society of St Columban.

We begin our series of articles celebrating the faces of the Columban future by introducing Fr Rafael Ramirez from Chile who is one of the most recently ordained Columban priests. He reflects on his calling and new missionary life in northern Myanmar. Even though the area is engaged in civil war he knew he had to take the risk to go there. He began his formation studies in Chile about 12 years ago. He did his spiritual year in Peru and then studied the English language in the USA. For his first missionary assignment he spent two years in South Korea. Fr Rafael Rameriz (pictured right) was ordained just over a year ago and we wish him all the best in his future missionary work.

In the first of our series on Columban historical moments Fr Neil Collins recalls the first group of Columban missionaries to go to China in 1920. Eleven members of the Maynooth Mission to China led by John Blowick and Edward Galvin landed in New York on 8 April 1920. Here they met the members of their team who were already in America and travelled onward together to China to begin their missionary work. The first missionaries captured footage of their voyage and their ordinations in the early 1920’s and produced a film called ‘Cross and Dragon’. At the time they knew that they were ‘making history with the camera’. The film expresses Fr Richard Ranaghan’s belief in the Church’s mission in China, as well as his deep love for the Chinese people who he describes as being ‘made in the image and likeness of God.’

Throughout November we especially remember our deceased friends and family. We thank everyone who have sent to us the names of family and friends they would like us to remember. All of the names we receive are placed before the altar of the chapel in the Columban House in Solihull and are included in our daily Masses and prayers.
