Filipino priest wins prestigious environmental award for tackling mining
A Filipino priest whose work protecting the environment by leading a grassroots movement on the Philippine island of Mindoro has been named as one of six winners of the 2012 Goldman Environmental Prize, which honours grassroots environmental heroes from the global south. He is a good friend and partner of the Columbans.

Columban receives Pakistan’s highest civilian honour
A civic reception was held at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Hyderabad, on 26 March to honour Fr. Robert McCulloch, an Australian Columban priest, who received the Sitara-e-Quaid-Azam from the Governor of Sindh three days earlier for his services to Pakistan. This is Pakistan’s highest civilian award.

Columbans are among the many church people in Korea who are supporting a campaign to save the island paradise of Jeju from being turned into a military base.

‘CHINA’ theme for J&P Conference 2012
Columbans are involved in the annual National Justice and Peace Network conference 20-22 July: “A NEW WORLD ORDER ? – CHINA TODAY AND OUR RESPONSE”. It will take place at the Hayes Conference Centre in Swanwick, Derbyshire. All welcome, and there is a special programme for young people attending the conference.

A tribute to Rosemary Read
Rosemary Read died unexpectedly and peacefully at her home in Derby on Sunday evening 18 March. What a very dear friend and loyal colleague in the mission of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation we have lost. The Columbans, whom she worked with for nearly three decades, would like to pay tribute to her.

Oscar Romero: Witness to Radical Compassion
Columban JPIC was among several hundred people who attended an ecumenical service in Central London on Saturday 24 March to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador.

Remembering Archbishop Romero
This year, Saturday 24 March will mark the 32nd anniversary of Archbishop Oscar Romero’s assassination in El Salvador. Across Britain around the time there will be religious services, meetings and film showings to commemorate the martyrdom. Together they make up ‘Romero Week’ with many activities on Saturday March 24th itself.

Rio + 20 and Water
The world meets in June 2012 for Rio+20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to be held in Rio de Janeiro. It marks 20 years since the Rio ‘Earth Summit’. 1992’s original Rio conference was a landmark event, founding key political processes including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change climate talks and the Agenda 21 action plan.

Blasting to start at threatened Korean island.
Columbans – including Fr Pat Cunningham – are among peace activists, villagers and religious involved in the struggle against the controversial naval base being constructed on Jeju Island. Daily mass is said and vigils held at the site.
