Surge in Church environmental events
Christian Ecology Link told a recent  gathering of European Christian environmentalists in Sweden that more than 200 church-based environmental events are now taking place each year in Britain.
Christian Ecology Link’s website featured over 50 events in September and October alone, run by local churches about care of the environment. (See
www.christian-ecology.org.uk/whatson.htm)
The Autumn period is designated by The European Christian Environmental Network (ECEN)  as Creation Time or Creationtide
(See
www.ecen.org).
CEL’s Web Editor, Dr Judith Allinson, of Settle, North Yorkshire, travelled to Sweden by bus, avoiding air travel. The Assembly had the theme, Living in a New Energy Era.

It’s a sin to fly, says bishop
The Anglican Bishop of London has declared it sinful for people to contribute to climate change by flying on holiday, driving a "gas-guzzling" car or failing to use energy-saving measures in the home. Richard Chartres said in July that he would encourage vicars to preach more green sermons and warn congregations that it is now a moral obligation for Christians to lead eco-friendly lifestyles.
Chartres, who chairs the bishops’ panel on the

environment, said: "There is now an overriding imperative to walk more lightly upon the earth and we need to make our lifestyle decisions in that light. Making selfish choices such as flying on holiday or buying a large car are a symptom of sin. Sin is not just a restricted list of moral mistakes. It is living a life turned in on itself where people ignore the consequences of their actions.
The Anglican church is taking steps to improve its own environmental record and has asked vicars to carry out energy audits so they can reduce their "carbon footprint". It owns some of the largest and draughtiest buildings in Britain, including medieval cathedrals, gothic churches and ageing parsonages. "We have no right to appeal to our contemporaries on this issue if we have failed to put our own house in order," said Chartres.

Pipe Dreams
From now until early December, the Riding Lights Theatre Company, in support of WaterAid, is presenting Pipe Dreams, a funny whodunnit about what is happening to our water. A 59-date tour of England, Wales and Scotland is organised and many of the host venues are churches. For a list of dates and venues see:
