Up in smoke? Latin America and the Caribbean
Working Group on Climate Change and Development
This is the third report of a coalition of development and environment agencies, including Columban Faith and Justice, concerned about the links between climate change and human development. It catalogues the impact of climate change and environmental degradation, ranging from drought in the Amazon to floods in Haiti; vanishing glaciers in Colombia to extreme cold in the Andes; and hurricanes, not only in Central America and the Caribbean, but also in southern Brazil. Across the region, the capacity of natural ecosystems to act as buffers against extreme weather events and other shocks is being undermined, leaving poor people more vulnerable.

The Greening of Christianity
Lloyd Geering
Christianity burst into life 2000 years ago with a message of salvation for people then expecting an imminent end of the world and the return of Jesus Christ. Fundamentalists still await that. We now face an ecological crisis and Christianity has been blamed for contributing to it. Geering, a New Zealand-based Presbyterian minister, discusses some radical changes Christianity needs to undergo if it is to play a positive role in the salvation of humankind within this entirely new situation.

There you go!
Survival International
This little cartoon book - a biting critique of how tribal peoples are being destroyed in the name of 'development' - is designed to be read in two minutes. With vivid drawings and wry humour, the book depicts two executives arriving in a remote tribal community and imposing a 'Multi-Stakeholder Cross-Disciplinary Integrated approach'. The effects are to leave the tribal people landless, squatting on the edge of a city. The launch of the book marks the start of a new Survival campaign to highlight how the concept of development is often used to justify the dispossession of tribal peoples.
